Intuitive Abstractions

These paintings mimic the arc of life…

They start out blank, followed by a series of random marks - symbolizing the chaotic origins of life beginning. These random, yet rhythmic, musical marks begin to turn into more defined shapes and colors, which are then honed and adjusted though multiple passes - mirroring adolescence and adulthood. The final stage is using the acquired “elder” wisdom and perspective gained through the piece to reflect and refine. Then the work, and the arc is complete.

Much like the shimmering haze on the blacktop during a hot day can remind us of water and/or the sky’s reflection, the goal is to lead the mind to relating to familiarity through the experience of viewing the paint. When we look into a forest it could easily be perceived as a mess or a sea of darkness etc, but our familiarity differentiates it for us in real time we see it as a forest. The shapes may evoke a different emotion, or take on a different meaning for each viewer which is part of the attempted impact of each piece. It’s not inherent, it’s not accidental, it can be random, but intuition and reaction and decision making after the chaos is what makes it relatable. The artwork is meant to reinstate the inherent sense of wonder in all of us, the same sense of wonder that we are actively learning to forget.
